Congratulations to Dustin Pedroia of the Boston Red Sox for being named AL MVP. On September 21, I predicted his fate in my post Dustin Destined for MVP. 2008 was a very good year for Pedroia. In addition to MVP, he was an AL All Star, a Gold Glove recipient and named a Silver Slugger. He is the first Major Leaguer ever to win Rookie of the Year honors, and MVP and a Gold Glove the next. The last second baseman to win the MVP was Nellie Fox in 1959. And at 5’9″, Pedroia is the shortest player to win the award since 5’8″ Yogi Berra won it for the last time in 1961. Yogi once said, “Congratulations, I knew the record would stand until it was broken.” Pedroia’s record is likely to stand tall for some time!
